Aamir Khan says he doesn’t want to do a ‘bad job’ while adapting Mahabharata: ‘It’s a big responsibility’

Aamir Khan spoke about his dream project Mahabharata and admitted that he cannot afford to do a “bad job” while adapting the epic.

Aamir Khan has previously spoken about his dream project, Mahabharata. In a recent interaction, the Ghajini actor admitted that he cannot afford to do a “bad job” while adapting the epic. He added that he is mindful of the responsibility to make Indians proud, which is why he wants to take his time before taking the project forward.

Speaking to News18, Aamir talked about the significance of Mahabharata to Indians. He said, “That’s my dream, let’s see if it becomes a reality one day. I really would love to have the opportunity to do that, but it is a big responsibility. Indians are so strongly connected, it is in our blood. I don’t think there is any Indian who hasn’t read the Bhagavad Gita or, at the very least, heard it from their grandmother. Making a film, which is so fundamental for all Indians, is also a big responsibility. I often say this, ‘You can let Mahabharata down, Mahabharata will never let you down.’ You do a bad job, you’ll let it down. I want to make sure that if I ever make this film, I make it in such a way that all Indians feel really proud.”

Calling Mahabharata the “mother of all” Hollywood fantasy films, he said, “Over the years, we have seen a lot of Hollywood films which are big entertainers, Lord of the Rings or Avatar. The world has seen it all. But this (Mahabharata) is the mother of it all. So I think Indians will be really proud if it comes out well. I am taking my time because I want to make sure I get it right. This isn’t the first time Aamir Khan has spoken about his dream project. In an earlier interaction with Raj Shamani, the actor hinted that Mahabharata might be his swansong. He said, “Maybe after doing this, I will feel that I have nothing left to do. I cannot do anything after this, as the material of this film is going to be like that.”

On the work front, Aamir was last seen in Sitaare Zameen Par. His production venture Happy Patel: Khatarnak Jasoos, starring Vir Das in the lead role, is currently running in theatres. He is also bankrolling his son Junaid Khan’s next film Ek Din and Sunny Deol-starrer Lahore 1947.
