Veteran filmmaker Uday Shankar Pani’s debut solo painting exhibition titled ‘From Celluloid to Canvas’ was inaugurated at Grescasa in Laxmi Industrial Estate, Andheri (W), by noted music composer Daboo Malik, singer Shraddha Pandit and well-known philanthropist Dr Aneel Kashi Murarka. The opening saw the presence of family, friends and well-wishers, including Pani’s wife, his son, music composer Vaibhav Pani, and daughter-in-law, who were present to support him on this significant creative milestone.
Considered the first-ever solo painting exhibition by a practicing Indian filmmaker, ‘From Celluloid to Canvas’ features close to 57 works created over five decades starting as early as the 1970’s. An FTII alumnus, Pani’s career spans assisting on major productions such as Richard Attenborough’s Gandhi and Krishna Shah’s Shalimar, to directing nine feature films of his own, and shaping landmark television shows including Dekh Bhai Dekh and Surabhi among many others. The exhibition features a diverse body of work that includes portraits, landscapes, abstracts, florals and wildlife, executed primarily in oils, alongside watercolours, acrylics and mixed media, including some works created using his bare fingers.
