Yash’s Toxic postponement is a wise call amid overseas uncertainty

The makers of Yash’s upcoming film Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-Ups have decided to postpone its release in view of the ongoing uncertainty in the Middle East, a region considered crucial for overseas box office collections. The decision has been taken after evaluation of the current situation and following suggestions from international distributors, who reportedly advised a delay given the importance of the market. This also means that the movie won’t be clashing with another biggie in the form of Dhurandhar: The Revenge.

Toxic, starring Yash and directed by Geetu Mohandas, was initially gearing up for a large-scale release, with the team fully prepared to begin an extensive promotional campaign. However, considering the present instability in a key international territory, the producers have chosen to adopt a cautious approach and push the film’s release to a later date. The postponement comes at a time when promotional activities were about to kick off in full swing. A grand trailer launch event had been scheduled in Bangalore on March 8, followed by a series of press conferences planned across multiple cities in India. The marketing strategy had already been finalized, with hoardings booked, theatre listings aligned, and promotional logistics put firmly in place.

In addition, advance bookings were expected to open soon, indicating that the film was in the final stages of its release preparations. The groundwork for a wide theatrical rollout had been completed, and the team was ready to initiate the next phase of promotions.

Despite being fully prepared for release, the makers have prioritized long-term prospects over immediate gains. With the Middle East playing a significant role in international revenue for big-ticket Indian films, the team has opted to wait for a more stable environment before bringing Toxic to theatres.

Veteran trade analyst Taran Adarsh fully agrees with the postponement of Toxic due to various reasons. “The first thing, had Toxic and Dhurandhar: The Revenge arrived on the same day, it would have been a historic showdown, there’s no denying that,” he said. “But pre-release, the exhibitors and the distributors would be having a tough time. They’ll be fighting for the screen, they’ll be fighting for the shows, they’ll be fighting for the national chain shows as well as single screen shows. There would be a lot of big conflict among themselves.”

The second reason he pointed out is the fan wars on social media. “The negativity starts building up between the fans,” said Adarsh. “And that would spill over to the release week also, which is not a healthy thing. It can impact the business. So, it is better that there was no clash and now it’s an open ground for Dhurandhar 2 as well as for Toxic, right?”

Adarsh also pointed out that putting the fan wars aside, the decision is right from the business point of view as well. “Yash enjoys tremendous fan following in the Middle East area because a lot of South Indians are there. Even otherwise, besides the South Indian part, KGF 2 had done phenomenal business in the Gulf region, the entire Middle East. So looking at the uncertainty, what if they would not have released the film there? It would have been a loss of a big chunk of revenue. And it’s an expensive film. So why take chances now?”

The postponement means that both Toxic and Dhurandhar: The Revenge will be able to maximise their box office potential. “Let’s not forget, these are two of the most anticipated films on the horizon,” said Adarsh. “And there’s a lot riding on both the films as far as the investment is concerned. I agree that the clash might have created a lot of noise, but it would have diluted the business prospects. Now that they’re coming on separate dates, it makes more sense commercially. So, I think, is a step in the right direction.”
